Safe call: what it means

An arrangement with a trusted friend before meeting someone new: you tell them where you will be and who you are meeting, and check in at a set time. If you do not check in, they know to call or get help.

Also called: safety call.

In practice

A safe call is simple: share who you are meeting, where and when, then agree a check-in time with a trusted friend. Some people also share live location for the first meeting. It is a good habit for any first date, not just kink, and it is one of the tips in the Sparks safety guide.

Consent and safety

Consent tools only work when everyone agrees on them ahead of time, sober and without pressure. Anyone can pause or stop at any moment, and a “yes” last week is not a “yes” today. If something feels off, stopping is always the right call. For meeting someone new, see our safety tips.
