Portland, OR singles: free dating, honestly early
Portland has plenty of dating apps, and most of them want a monthly fee before you can say hi. Sparks is free and 18+, and upfront about it: we started in Eugene & Springfield, and Portland is brand new for us.
Portland dating without the subscription
Portland makes cheap first dates easy: free gardens, viewpoints, riverfront paths and one very large bookstore. Alberta, Hawthorne and the Pearl all have walkable coffee spots. The city is big enough that where you meet matters, so pick somewhere that is easy for both of you to reach.
Portland neighborhoods at a glance
- Alberta Arts District and Mississippi (North/Northeast): galleries, food carts and busy sidewalks, so meeting on a street corner here is easy.
- Hawthorne, Division and Belmont (Southeast): vintage shops, cafés and a laid-back crowd. Close to Laurelhurst Park and Mt. Tabor.
- The Pearl and Northwest (Nob Hill/NW 23rd): dense and walkable, near Powell’s and Forest Park.
- St. Johns and Kenton (North Portland): a small-town feel, Cathedral Park and the St. Johns Bridge.
- Sellwood and Montavilla: quieter neighborhood main streets that are good for low-key dates.
Free and cheap first-date spots in Portland
These are real places we checked. Hours change, so confirm before you go.
- Powell’s City of Books (W. Burnside): free to browse, open daily. Picking a book for each other is a classic, low-pressure first date.
- International Rose Test Garden (Washington Park): free, open early until late evening, with city and mountain views on clear days.
- Hoyt Arboretum: free, with miles of trails and a visitor center open daily. Walkable from the Washington Park MAX station.
- Pittock Mansion grounds: the house tour costs money, but the grounds and viewpoint are free, with one of the best views over the city.
- Laurelhurst Park and Mt. Tabor Park: classic Southeast parks. Mt. Tabor’s roads are closed to cars on Wednesdays, which makes them good for walking.
- Cathedral Park (St. Johns): a riverside lawn under the St. Johns Bridge, open until midnight.
- Tom McCall Waterfront Park and the Eastbank Esplanade: a loop over two bridges along both sides of the Willamette.
Meeting safely in Portland
- For the first meet, choose a busy café, Powell’s or a park in daylight. Avoid empty stretches of trail or waterfront at night.
- Use TriMet (MAX, buses and the Portland Streetcar) so nobody has to give out an address for a pickup. Check the last train before an evening date.
- Tell a friend where you’ll be and share your location if you can. Keep chats on Sparks until you are comfortable.
- Never send money, gift cards or codes. See the meetup safety checklist.
