Free personals: how to write a personal ad that gets replies

Personal ads are the oldest form of online dating: you say who you are and what you want, and the right people answer. Here is how to do it well on Sparks — for free, and safely.

What a personal ad is (and is not)

A personal ad is a short, honest note to the kind of person you want to meet. On Sparks it can be about a date, a casual or ongoing connection, a kink-friendly partner, a couple looking for a third, or someone to talk to. It is not an advert for a paid service — ads with prices, rates or "donations" are blocked, and the rules apply to every post.

Five things that make an ad work

  • A specific title. "Night owl in the city looking for witty conversation" beats "Hi". Say one true thing about you and one thing you want.
  • Lead with you. Two or three sentences on your personality, schedule and vibe. Specific details ("I cook a mean ramen", "early riser, gym at 6") are more attractive than adjectives.
  • Be clear about what you want. Casual or ongoing, kink-friendly or vanilla, friends first or straight to a date. Clarity saves everyone time and is the basis of consent.
  • State a couple of boundaries. "Chat first", "no pics on the first message", "couples must both be on board" — people who respect boundaries respond to them.
  • Pick the right category and tags. On Sparks you choose who you are seeking (women, men, couples, or other/open) plus tags like Casual, Ongoing, Discreet or Friends first, so the right people can filter to you.

What to leave out

  • Your full name, address, workplace or anything that identifies you offline.
  • Prices, rates, "roses" or any hint of payment — those ads are removed.
  • Anything referring to minors, "teens", school themes or "barely legal" framing. Zero tolerance.
  • Explicit photos. Use a tasteful photo or none at all; you can share more privately once you trust someone.

Personals in your city

Every Sparks ad can include a city, and the Classifieds board lets you search by city or keyword. Sparks is new, so your city may have only a handful of ads at first — posting one of the first ads in your area is the best way to get noticed. Add the city people actually search for (for example "Portland" rather than a small suburb) so nearby members can find you.

Personal ads vs. Smash or Pass

Ads are great when you know exactly what you want and prefer words over photos. Smash or Pass is faster and more visual: you see profiles one at a time, and DMs unlock only when both people smash. Many members use both.

Replying safely

Read the whole ad, reply to something specific in it, and keep early chats on Sparks. Never send money to anyone you met online. More tips on the safety page.
