Traffic-light system: what it means

A simple, popular set of safewords. Green means “all good, keep going”, yellow means “slow down or check in”, and red means “stop now”. It makes check-ins quick and easy, even in the middle of a scene.

Also called: green / yellow / red.

In practice

The colors make check-ins fast: a partner can ask “Color?” and get a one-word answer. Green means carry on, yellow means ease off or talk, and red means stop completely. It is popular because it is easy to remember and works for beginners and experienced people alike, including at events with house rules.

Consent and safety

Consent tools only work when everyone agrees on them ahead of time, sober and without pressure. Anyone can pause or stop at any moment, and a “yes” last week is not a “yes” today. If something feels off, stopping is always the right call. For meeting someone new, see our safety tips.
