Primal: what it means
Play focused on instinct rather than words or rules: chasing, wrestling, growling and physical playfulness. People often describe themselves as primal predators or primal prey. Like any play, it is negotiated first.
Also called: primal play.
In practice
Primal play is about instinct and physical playfulness, which can make words harder to reach in the moment. That is why partners agree non-verbal signals beforehand and keep the space safe from hard edges and obstacles. As with any physical play, start gently and build up only with agreement.
Consent and safety
Roles describe what partners agreed to, not who matters more. Every role sits inside negotiated limits, a working safeword or signal, and the freedom for anyone to step out of the dynamic at any time. Real-life respect never switches off. For meeting someone new, see our safety tips.
