Polyamory: what it means
Having, or being open to, more than one loving relationship at the same time, with the knowledge and consent of everyone involved.
Also called: poly.
In practice
Polyamorous people may have several committed relationships, structured in many different ways. Communication, time management and honesty about feelings, including jealousy, are a big part of it. Everyone involved knows about the others and agrees.
Consent and safety
Ethical non-monogamy depends on honesty and ongoing consent from everyone affected, not just the people who proposed it. Agreements can be renegotiated, sexual-health conversations matter, and anyone can change their mind. For meeting someone new, see our safety tips.
