Metamour: what it means
Your partner’s other partner. You are not dating each other, but you are connected through someone you both care about.
In practice
Metamours may be close friends, polite acquaintances or barely in touch, depending on what everyone prefers. Many polyamorous people find that friendly, respectful metamour relationships make the whole network calmer. It is a relationship that grows on its own terms.
Consent and safety
Ethical non-monogamy depends on honesty and ongoing consent from everyone affected, not just the people who proposed it. Agreements can be renegotiated, sexual-health conversations matter, and anyone can change their mind. For meeting someone new, see our safety tips.
