Limits (hard & soft): what it means
Boundaries around what someone will and will not do. A hard limit is a firm “never”: it is not up for discussion in the moment. A soft limit is a “maybe, carefully” or “not yet”: something a person might explore slowly, only with prior agreement. Limits can change over time, and they are always respected.
Also called: hard limit, soft limit.
In practice
People share limits during negotiation and revisit them over time. A hard limit is never pushed or “tested”. A soft limit is only approached slowly, with agreement made in advance, never improvised in the moment. Respecting someone’s limits, without sulking or arguing, is one of the clearest signs of a trustworthy partner.
Consent and safety
Consent tools only work when everyone agrees on them ahead of time, sober and without pressure. Anyone can pause or stop at any moment, and a “yes” last week is not a “yes” today. If something feels off, stopping is always the right call. For meeting someone new, see our safety tips.
