Dom / sub: what it means

A consensual power exchange in which one partner (the Dominant) takes the lead and the other (the submissive) chooses to follow, within limits both agreed. The submissive’s consent and limits shape the whole dynamic. A D/s dynamic can last for one scene or be part of an ongoing relationship.

Also called: Dominant / submissive, D/s.

In practice

A D/s dynamic is designed by both people. The submissive’s limits shape what the Dominant may do, and either partner can pause or end the dynamic. Healthy D/s relationships are built on communication and respect outside the dynamic too. Some last for one scene; others are part of a long-term relationship.

Consent and safety

Roles describe what partners agreed to, not who matters more. Every role sits inside negotiated limits, a working safeword or signal, and the freedom for anyone to step out of the dynamic at any time. Real-life respect never switches off. For meeting someone new, see our safety tips.
