Aftercare: what it means

The care partners give each other after a scene: water, a blanket, a snack, cuddles, quiet time, talking it through, or checking in the next day. Everyone involved can need aftercare, not just the person on the receiving end, and it is part of negotiation.

In practice

Aftercare looks different for everyone. Some people want a blanket and quiet; others want to talk, laugh or eat a snack. Talk about it during negotiation so nobody has to guess afterwards. A next-day message (“How are you feeling?”) is a simple form of aftercare that many people appreciate.

Consent and safety

Consent tools only work when everyone agrees on them ahead of time, sober and without pressure. Anyone can pause or stop at any moment, and a “yes” last week is not a “yes” today. If something feels off, stopping is always the right call. For meeting someone new, see our safety tips.
