Swinging: what it means

A form of non-monogamy, usually among couples, focused on recreational intimacy with other people, often at social events. Many swingers call it “the lifestyle”.

Also called: the lifestyle.

In practice

Swinging usually centers on couples meeting other couples or individuals, often at social events. Like any form of ENM, it relies on both partners genuinely agreeing, clear shared boundaries, and respect for the people they meet, who have their own limits and say.

Consent and safety

Ethical non-monogamy depends on honesty and ongoing consent from everyone affected, not just the people who proposed it. Agreements can be renegotiated, sexual-health conversations matter, and anyone can change their mind. For meeting someone new, see our safety tips.
